Mel.opho.be reviews our Mercury Lounge show!
Jun, 29, 2008

Mel.opho.be was at our last Mercury Lounge show. They're a site that reviews live shows. I like them because they're brutally honest. We were really flattered when we heard what they thought of our last show, check the link below! http://mel.opho.be/index.php/show-reviews/wakeywakey-mercury-lounge-new-york-ny-june-14-2008.html

Wakey plays Bowery Ballroom!
Jun, 26, 2008

Last night we had our first ever show at Bowery Ballroom. This has been a goal of mine for about 10 years, and it was every bit as rewarding as I could have imagined. Thank you thank you thank you to all of the people who came down, and have been coming down to see us play. We couldn't do any of this without you. I'm really excited about the way the band sounds right now, so if you haven't heard us in a while, get ready for a surprise the next time you come down. We're also probably gonna post a recording from last night, so keep checking in! Much love, -Michael

Wakey! Updates!
Nov, 29, 2007

Hey guys!

We're working really hard to insure that our CD release at Mercury Lounge (12/12) will be the biggest show ever. I don't want to say exactly what's going down, but I will say it will be the biggest band I've ever put forward, and we'll be having some amazing cameos. I guess Mercury would rather not do a pre-sale, so I would recommend coming early as possible. We will be starting at 10. Please mark your calendars now, and spread the word about this exciting night.

I hope you all enjoyed last week's Maps cover as much as I did. This week we took a completely different route, using a Wurlitzer electric piano, and laying down 6 overlapping vocal tracks. The result is a somewhat haunting rendition of the Beach Boy's classic- California Girls! One of our favorite blogs, Pop Tarts Suck Toasted has agreed to host this week, so go there now, or follow the link from our Myspace Page, and be sure to leave Pat a comment on the blog and tell him what you think!

Be sure to keep your eyes open for this month's copy of Indie Sounds! We were interviewed for their 5 questions section on the back cover!

Here are some sites that have taken notice of Wakey!Wednesdays recently!
-Pop Tarts Suck Toasted have posted our latest cover
-CMJ hosted 2 weeks ago..
-Punk Photo already posted Cali Girls as well
-The World Forgot has some really nice things to say
-The Music Slut was into our Weezer
-Veritas Lux Mea was into Maps
-Underrated Magazine is extremely, well... Underrated

Thanks to all of these writers for their amazing support!

Say It Ain't So!!!
Nov, 15, 2007

After much hard work and planning, WAKEY!WAKEY! and Family Records are excited to announce that our live CD, Silent as a Movie will be officially released December 12th at Mercury Lounge!!!  I'll be posting a link for tickets next week, and I'd strongly suggest buying them in advance, as I'm sharing the bill with JAYMAY, Jukebox the Ghost, and AA Bondy (for those of you who don't speak indie rock, that's like, um... AWESOME).  Thank you all for helping us come so far.

CMJ is so excited about WAKEY!Wednesday's free download this month they've insisted upon exclusively hosting it.  The song is one of my all time sing-along favs, "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer.  Here's an excerpt-

"I was at a 4 a.m. rooftop party in Alphabet City [in New York] with a bunch of musician friends and one of them, Andrew Hoepfner of Creaky Boards, starting playing this song on his bass and I joined in," says Grubbs on what inspired his rendition of the staple singalong. "It ended up a 12-people jam of drunken music appreciation. Well for us at least; not all of the neighbors shared the sentiment."

Go here to read the rest, and get the free download!!!
Thanks CMJ!!!

Pop Tarts Suck Toasted is giving away 3 pairs of FREE tickets to see me at Highline Ballroom(next Wednesday, 11/21)!!! Go here to enter the contest!  Thanks Pop Tarts!

New Download Posted!!!
Oct, 31, 2007

So last week was really tough because Myspace has quit making songs downloadable.  As a result, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun saw a ton of plays, but none of you now own it as was previously promised.  We've found a way to post songs you can download now, and will just release Girls Just Wanna at the end of the series!  To get our newest free cover- Apology Song by The Decemberists, just go to our myspace and click on the huge banner that's about halfway down the page.  It looks like this-

Pop Headwound has struck again and you can check out the great write up HEREThey also posted an unreleased version of LGA...

We're excited to return to our favorite local venue this Friday night at 10- Rockwood Music Hall!  If you don't know, Rockwood is at 196 Allen St between Houston and Stanton.  Here's a Map.  The bill is stacked with great performers, as always, so come on out and help us celebrate!  Things are really good right now, and we owe it all to you and your constant support.

WAKEY!WAKEY! plays Central Park!!!
Oct, 25, 2007

Kid Rockers just called and asked us to play this Saturday(10/27) at the Central Park Bandshell!!!  We're so excited.  I've always wanted to play this stage.  It's the day of the Pumpkin Festival, so word on the street is about twenty thousand people are expected to pass through.  We'll be on at about 1:30, and we're doing a short full band set.  Also on the bill- LEVY and Chris Barron (former Spin Doctor's front man).  Come on out, carve a pumpkin, and celebrate the fall!  Families are welcome.  The Bandshell is midpark between 66th and 72nd streets. Click HERE for a map.

Pop Tarts Strikes Again!
Oct, 25, 2007

When Brooklyn Vegan asked us to play their CMJ showcase we were floored. When I saw Pop Tarts Suck Toasted's review of the show, however, I was speechless... Here's an excerpt-

"It was the perfect storm of a performance where everything just seems to fall into place. The banter was well timed and amusing, they played the songs I've come to love, and other people were extremely receptive of the growing band. It wouldn't surprise me to see Wakey! Wakey! come out of this week with some major buzz blowing them along until they release their debut live album."

MTV News...
Oct, 2, 2007

Unannounced to us, MTV News was at our last residency show! Here's just some of what they had to say...

WHAT A WEEK!
May, 2, 2007

Thank you all so much for your unbelievable support last week! The response to the show was so kind, so supportive... I just don't know what to say but thank you. Part of the reason it's taken me so long to post this is that I'm realy lost for words. Thank you thank you thank you.

Some great press-
CMJ said-
Grubbs has the unique ability to transform and ho-hum venue into a futuristic circus. At one point an accordion player appeared from the crowd, and later a guitar player. It was as if Wakey!Wakey! spotlighted as a magician in a previous life, putting to risk a one-act wonder, but nevertheless keeping us on our toes. If Grubbs can perform a set like last night every time, then he is going to have a hard time moving on from the likes of me.

The Underrated Magazine said-
It was, hands down, one of the best sets I had seen in a very long time. I almost forgot how good it felt to see one of those kinds of shows, where you are pleasantly shocked from start to end.

It all comes down to solid pop with the extra of subtle lyrics, and Mike Grubbs is definitely a talented singer with a great voice.

WAKEY!WAKEY! on Television!!!
Apr, 4, 2007

I was a guest on ?The New Yorkers? last night. It was such a crazy experience. I did a 15 minute interview and played Falling Apart. We talked about Family Records, my background, how I moved to the city, and CBGBs. I?ll be posting the video of the night as soon as I get it uploaded. I was sitting in the green room before the show, and thinking, ?how can I talk to a complete stranger for 15 minutes in front of 100 thousand people and make it interesting?? The host was so cool, it just flew by.

Roman Games Diary!
Mar, 28, 2007

Roman Games Diary was at my last show at Matchless. Here's what they had to say...

"Seems there is new wave of unpretentious intelligent pop growing out here. Call it Bob Dylan with a sense of humor or Ray Davies with an American accent, Wakey!Wakey! is a prime example..."

Check out http://romangame.blogspot.com and see a live video of Honey Covered Hands from the show!

Pop Headwound
Mar, 15, 2007

I'm so fortunate to have some of the area's best music blogs talking about me right now! Here's an excerpt from one of my favorites called Pop Headwound.

"His voice is like a smoke alarm in the dead of night: huge, dominant, unable to be ignored, maybe even life-saving. His singing commanded the room, but his songs resonated for more reasons than just the one."

Read the full artical at http://popheadwound.blogspot.com/index.html

Things are right on track for the April 24th show. I've been rehearsing with some of the most talented musicians I've ever known. Buy your tickets now by clicking the link above, and be sure to keep coming back for more updates!
